My response.
Glad you like my work.
Most of my textile work is up on my site. Prior to that I worked with music and with painting/drawing/print making, and I still do that stuff too, but I didn’t start doing much textile wise until I started to crochet in 2002.
I had learned to knit long ago but it never took off for me creatively.
In 2002, ana voog and I learned how to crochet together. We both wanted to learn so we invited people over to teach us. James Walters wrote an amazing book on crochet that a friend lent me. “Crochet workbook”
Here is his website.
http://www.crochet.nu/scjwc/index.htmlHe was the first big inspiration to go into freeform crochet. I was lucky that I was learning along side ana as she is so creative.
The next big influence is Lexi Boeger of
http://www.pluckyfluff.comHer yarns were the first I saw that really were expanding ideas about what yarn is. She inspired both ana and I to take up spinning.
Over the past several years there have been more and more amazing crocheters and spinners that are popping up all over the place. My links sections has lots of them.
For inspiration, I am often most inspired by the materials at hand. I gather them around me and see what they want to be. I love the freedom of incorporating recycled materials and random objects.
I am a big fan of japanese street fashion, so I know that influences my work, as well as haute couture designers like alexander mcqueen and as four. The natural world is a big influence for me too. And the totally artificial shiny plastic world of the future. So I feel like I incorporate feelings from lichen and moss and sea creatures, as well as robots and space monsters.
Hope these ramblings help you out.
